Transsexuality is the term commonly used for a person who has undergone hormonal and surgical treatment to acquire the physical appearance of people of the sex with which they identify.
Gender is a cultural issue and there are many people who do not feel that their biological sex - and the gender established at birth - corresponds to the gender with which they perceive themselves.
Sex reassignment involves going through hormone replacement therapy and even in some cases surgery.
But ... can you be gay or lesbian or bisexual and be trans?
Well of course!
But ... do all trans people carry out genital surgery and hormonal treatment?
Not always, there are people like the Spanish monologist and illustrator Elsa Ruiz who has decided not to carry out certain "trans norms" such as genital surgery.
She explains it superbly in the video (sorry... it's just in Spanish)
I propose you a challenge. One of the advantages of having an avatar in Second Life is the possibility of "being of the other gender" and this way - MAYBE - you can understand a little better what it means to be a woman or what it means to be a man in the virtual environment.
So ... DO IT!
Change your gender for a few hours or for several days and see what happens ... do people treat you differently? How do you perceive yourself like this? Do you already have an avatar with a gender that is not yours?

La transexualidad es el término que habitualmente se utiliza para una persona que se ha sometido a tratamiento hormonal y quirúrgico para adquirir la apariencia física de las personas del sexo con el que se identifican.
El género es una cuestión cultural y existen numerosas personas que no sienten que su sexo biológico -y el género establecido al nacer- se corresponde con el género con el que se autoperciben.
La reasignación de sexo supone pasar por una terapia de reemplazo hormonal e incluso en algunos casos cirugía.
Pero... ¿puedes ser gay o lesbiana o bisexual y ser trans?
¡Pues claro!
Pero... ¿todas las personas trans llevan a cabo la cirugía genital y el tratamiento hormonal?
No siempre, existen personas como la monologuista e ilustradora española Elsa Ruiz que ha decidido no llevar a cabo determinadas "normas trans" como por ejemplo la cirugía genital.

Te propongo un reto. Una de las ventajas de tener un avatar en Second Life es la posibilidad de "ser del otro género" y de este modo -QUIZÁS- puedas entender un poco mejor qué significa ser una mujer o qué significa ser un hombre en el entorno virtual.

Cambia tu género durante unas horas o durante varios días y a ver qué ocurre... ¿la gente te trata diferente? ¿cómo te percibes a ti mismo/a así? ¿ya tienes un avatar con un género que no es el tuyo?
